The IRIS Leadership Course

How do we effectively engage with our global academic counterparts in Industry 4.0 amid limited resources, bureaucratic hurdles, and a comparatively thin pool of intellectual capital? How do we form a collective of intellectual resources across Philippine universities and surge as one? These were just some of the questions that absorbed university presidents and senior administrators from fifteen major Philippine universities who attended the groundbreaking course “Building the Innovation University” organized by The Institutes for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship (The IRIS).
The IRIS Presidential Leadership Course was an intensive program designed to enable the leadership in Philippine universities to phase in their respective institutions into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and help university leaders navigate through the opportunities, manage risks and hurdles, and align their university strategies in the digital-genomic age.
The 15 university leaders of state and private higher education institutions from various parts of the country led by Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) President, Dr. Tirso A.Ronquillo (Batangas State U.) engaged in driven, interactive discussionson practical, experience-based cases with highly renowned researchers and scientists-technopreneurs such as Dr. Carlos Primo David, Dr. Isagani D. Padolina, Dr. Larry L. Ilag, Dr. Eva Cutiongco-de la Paz, Dr. Gonzalo C. Serafica, and Dr. David Hall. The interactions focused on reforms in the leadership and institutional governance of universities in the digital-genomic age, building the innovation and entrepreneurial culture of the university, and creating strategic, transformative, future-ready teaching, research and public engagement programs, and producing the Philippines’ human and intellectual capital that can plan and implement a technology-explicit development agenda.
A highlight of the course was a half-day of reflective discussions on leadership and governance with former CHED Chairperson Dr. Ester A. Garcia, former DOST Secretary and IRRI Deputy Director-General Dr. William G.Padolina, former Agriculture Secretary and ICRISAT Director-General Dr. William D. Dar, and former Secretary-General of Philippines National Commission for UNESCO Dr. Virginia A, Miralao.
